Time was when public opinion in this country underestimated American artists who did their work at home, when it demanded foreign honors as a kind of diploma or certificate before being convinced that an artist had really grown up. For a decade or more after the Columbian exposition the superstition lingered that any American artist must show proofs why he should be permitted to stand on the same plane with a real Frenchman, German, Englishman, or other scion of more favored races; nothing but foreign medals and other honors would convince his fellow countrymen of his success.
Now there is some danger of the pendulum swinging too far in the other direction, Monroe warned, of our being unjust to those American artists who live abroad. ... Such an attitude is as provincial as the other, and quite unworthy of American artists, critics, commissioners, art juries, hanging committees and exhibition officers.
We must be citizens of the world. None of us can shut himself up at home and pretend that his village or town or nation is all. What will come out of it in art or literature no one can tell until the twenty-third or the twenty-fifth century rounds up its predecessors. But it may be a bigger art and a bigger literature than our long subdivided and distracted world has ever known before.

Several more fissures became active during 11 March, erupting pyroclastics and tephra that fell over Sicily and accumulated to form the Monti Rossi scoria cone. The lava flows of 1669 contain up to 18% bubbles, a large proportion and considerably more than expected from lava flows on the surface that might explain the fluidity of the flows that maintained pahoehoe morphology 16 km (9.9 miles) from the vents. The lava also contains large phenocrysts of plagioclase, as do lavas of other eruptions of the 17th century; these lavas are called cicirara and they often appear at the end of an eruption cycle at Mount Etna. The lava flow With a volume of 0.5–1 km3 (0.12–0.24 cu mi) of 1669 covered an area of 37 km2 (14 sq mi)35-40 km2 (15 sq mi), radically changing the morphology of the volcano. The Golden Bough is a painting from 1834 by the English painter J. M. W. Turner. It depicts the episode of the golden bough from the Aeneid by Virgil. John Ruskin described The Golden Bough as a sequel to Turner's 1823 painting The Bay of Baiae, which is based on the myth of Apollo and the Cumaean Sibyl The painting depicts a scene from book VI of the ancient Roman epic Aeneid by Virgil. Turner has used Christopher Pitt's English translation. The hero Aeneas wants to enter the Underworld to consult his dead father. The Sibyl of Cumae tells him that he needs to offer a golden bough from a sacred tree to Proserpine in order to enter. The painting shows the landscape around the lake Avernus, which is the entrance to the Underworld. The Sibyl stands to the left and holds a sickle and the cut bough. Dancing Fates in the background and a snake in the foreground forebode the mysteries of the Underworld. Turner's painting serves as its frontispiece and is addressed in James George Frazer evokes the painting in his book The Golden Bough (1890), in the opening paragraph: Who does not know Turner's picture of the Golden Bough? Whistle in the form of a dancing figure from Colima, Mexico, pottery, c. 300 B.C. - A.D. 200. 🎥 Whistling girls and Crowing hens always come to some bad ends . 🎭 Dance, among the most ephemeral of the arts, was central to Mesoamerican civilization. Dance performances, as attested by their depiction on vases and other utilitarian objects such as this whistle, typically encompassed rhythmic, structured movement, often by a group of people. Music was a vital element, frequently supplied by the dancers themselves. Performances served to bring together the community by reifying shared beliefs of social behavior, recounting seminal histories-both historical and mythic-and incarnating religious ideologies. As communal theater, performers were bedecked in ostentatious costumes that served to remove them from their social identities and the everyday reality of the community. The elaborate costuming and staging also elevated the event from a simple entertainment to an impressive, even iconic spectacle. This festooned dancer bends his knees and stretches out his arms as if frozen in mid-motion. Small holes in his hands likely accommodated dance fans or other performance accouterments. Necklaces composed of round beads, perhaps of precious jadeite, and a variety of bands adorn his wrists and legs. A wide neckpiece draped over the figure's shoulders and chest may have been made from pieces of cut shell. His sleeveless shirt might represent a tufted textile or animal hide, although it also recalls portrayals of the flayed skin of a sacrificial victim worn by celebrants as part of the rites of the deity Xipe Totec. The dancer's loincloth and overskirt are tied at the back with a large bow that resembles a bustle. A decorated textile band is wrapped adroitly around his head and secured by a strap below his chin. This object is a whistle, likely played by a performer similar to the dancer depicted by the instrument; its mouthpiece is found at the back of the figure's head.
